Highland Creek draws its name and enduring spirit from Highland Beach, Maryland, the historic community established in 1893 by descendants of formerly enslaved African Americans. Don Graves’s great‑grandparents built one of the first homes there, and generations of his family have carried forward its traditions of resilience, community‑building and leadership against the odds.
Established during segregation as a place of refuge and self-determination, Highland Beach became a place where excellence flourished despite exclusion. Its legacy—building institutions, expanding economic opportunity, and leading with integrity—continues to shape our values.
